[nagdu] Boots and Dew Claws

Hi Darla,
I didn't think you were. I just thought you started a topic about
experiences with booties and dew claws, so I was contributing. *smile*
The dew claws serve a purpose, though dogs seem to do just fine
without them. Dogs use them for traction and turning while they run,
for gripping when jumping onto things, and for gripping things in
general. I've seen many dogs use theirs as we would use our thumbs.
The Golden Guy will grip the edges of a bone or a hunk of meat using
his dew claws. When we're turning while riding the bus or a hayride,
the Golden Guy also grips my shoes using his dew claws to prevent
himself from sliding.
Some breeders remove the dew claws to give the front legs a smoother
look. The dew claws are also removed if the claws don't contain a
bone, which is more common with dew claws that form on the hind legs.
Some people, especially those with hunting dogs, remove the claws so
that they are not snagged on anything or broken.
