Blind 9-11 Author Inspires the Next Generation

International speaker and bestselling author, Michael Hingson, along with
his co-author and Castro Valley native Susy Flory, will be sharing the story
behind Thunder Dog, a #1 New York Times bestseller, at 7:30 p.m. on
Saturday, Nov. 2 at Castro Valley Center for the Arts.

 

On September 11, 2001, Michael Hingson, a man blind since birth, escaped
Tower Two of the World Trade Center in a harrowing journey down 78 flights
of stairs with his guide dog, Roselle. Ten years later, his memoir Thunder
Dog became a runaway bestseller. Readers of all ages continue to be inspired
by Thunder Dog's message of trust, teamwork, and Mike's refusal to let
adversity-whether it's blindness or a life-altering event like surviving
9/11-hold him back.

 

During the November 2 event, Michael will also launch his long-awaited
children's book, RUNNING WITH ROSELLE, with co-author Jeanette Hanscome.
Running With Roselle is a chapter book for children 8 and up and follows
Mike's childhood adventures, Roselle's early life and training from puppy to
guide dog hero, and the magical bond that equipped this team to overcome
limitations to survive one of America's darkest days.

 

Michael Hingson is a professional speaker who travels the world telling his
story of living with blindness, lessons learned from his experiences on
9/11, and the guide dog/handler relationship. His children's book co-author,
San Ramon resident Jeanette Hanscome, is the author of three YA books and
numerous articles. Jeanette also happens to be visually impaired and weaves
her experiences of living with limited vision into her writing.

 

Susy Flory, a Castro Valley native, is the co-author of Thunder Dog. Susy
attended local schools, graduated from UCLA, and is the author or co-author
of six books. A journalist at heart, she seeks out epic stories and loves
happy endings (especially involving dogs).
