I think people should disclose if they will be wearing glasses on flights.
How about that.

If we truly regard blindness as a characteristic, (an observation made by
Dr. Jernigan and something I believe), then we should not be defensive about
it at all. So, using a guide dog should not be a problem and we should act
as such. Disclosing the use of a guide dog is unnecessary and, as others
and I have already said, disclosure leads to more problems.

>From time to time I check out the policies of airlines by disclosing that I
will be traveling with a guide dog. Disclosure is suppose to aid in getting
services such as an escort from gate to gate on a connecting flight. In
fact, this happens less than half the time. However, on some airlines I do
regularly upon disclosure get a phone call asking for the dog's weight for
travel purposes. Crazy.

Best,

Hi Daryl,
I personally would not let the hotel know about my guide dog ahead of time.
When I first got my dog, I was looking into staying at a very small inn
(like 12 rooms) on an island. I did send them an email when I was looking to
stay there. I mentioned that I have a guide dog. I was unsure if such a
small property or a bed and breakfast, could deny access. At first, they
said no pets, but then I explained he was a guide dog and they were fine
with that. I ended up staying somewhere else. I do not mention my dog for
other hotel reservations.
Shortly after getting Pascal, I tried to stay in a Motel 6 or Super 8 in
Virginia (I think) and it was late at night. The guy wanted to charge me a
pet fee. I showed him the law, and tried to explain to him, but he just
couldn't understand English well enough. We were tired and just went to a
place down the street.
Knock on wood, but I've not had any issues over the past couple of years.
Don't worry that something may come up, just go in with your head held high.

I hope you have a wonderful trip!
Deanna and Pascal

Hi, all,

Quesiton for you.

I have posted before that my husband and myself, along with Jenny, are going
on a trip to Montana in a few weeks. I doublechecked my reservation
confirmation email from the hotel, and right at the bottom, it says no pets.

Now, I realize Jenny is not a pet... we all know this. I am debating
whether or not to disclose the fact that she is my guide dog now, or wait
until we arrive at the hotel. Does anyone have any advice? I realize I am
not obligated to notify the hotel, but I don't want to wind up stranded in
Montana and having to pay for alternate accommodations (worst-case scenario,
I know). We have stayed at this hotel before and had a wonderful
experience, but this was before I trained with Jenny.

I would love any opinions!

Daryl
