[nagdu] moving on from Airlines asking for a dog's weight.

I am sorry, I didn't mean to drag up something that I know has been discussed numberous times. I was just curious. My friend told me she booked a flight over the phone yesterday. She needs assistance with a wheelchair, and told them she does have a guide dog. I asked her if they questioned her about her dog's weight, and they did not.

Everyone,

I think we have beat this to death. Simply put, the airlines ask because they think they can get away with it and, again, they have made up a rule without basis.

This may be a subject for a NAGDU resolution to be brought to the convention floor in July. Let's turn the discussion into a plan of action.

Best,

Michael Hingson

Okay, so why can't they weigh the dog in with everyone and everything else?
They don't ask for any other weights in advance, so I'm confused as to why the dog weight is different.

Yes they do, you just don't realize it because the scales are built into the plane. They need to know this so the plane's weight to thrust ratio is where it needs to be.

I don't know about Canada, but U.S. air travel laws do not allow for the provision of an extra seat. Also however many service dogs end up on a plane is how many end up on a plane. there is no law restricting the number of service dogs on any particular flight.

I find the weight question really weird. they don't weigh your carry ons or the passengers. How much could a dog throw off the weight distribution of the plane?

Deanna,

Depending on the airline, they may ask this so that they can provide an extra seat for your guide. Airlines also have limits to the amount of service dogs they carry on planes. One airline asked for Jenny's measurements for this reason; another asked, but didn't seem to have a reason.

p.s. Did the PAWZ arrive yet?

Hi,
What is the point in an airline asking for your guide/service dog's weight?
Do all airlines do that now?
I haven't been asked this yet, but I just wonder in case it does happen.
Thanks!
Deanna and Pascal
