[nagdu] another GPS option

I have an Apex with the full version of Sendero GPS, and I love it. The
only problem is that both the unit itself, even without the Braille
display, and the GPS are a little more than most people can afford, and,
even if people can afford it, it's a little more money than people are
willing to go spend just for the GPS. I had assistance with purchasing both
the unit and the GPS. It has many features, including setting a
destination, calculating a vehicle or pedestrian route, manually building
a route from virtual positions or the actual position, exploring virtually,
recording and replying routes as you travel, looking up points of interest,
and creating user points of interest. It can announce data as you walk as
well as having a repeat setting--such as repeat distance to destination. I
like it because, once I get going, I can usually set what data I want to
hear and/or use the repeat setting and then just go hands free. Even in
familiar areas, I still like to use it to know how far I am going. If I am
riding in a taxi with a driver I don't know, I use it. As others have said,
though, it is not the answer to everything. It often does not know about
walking paths, and it cannot alert you of the things that a guide dog can
that are not known to GPS.

I was just going to tell Brandy and others about the new GPS update on the
Apex. I personally love it! The virtual mode is like having an accessible
MapQuest, and it can be talking if you want it to.

Has anyone played with the new Sendeor Maps on the Braille Note?
In version 9.4.1 the maps are included so you can browse
locations and routes off line and then if you want to buy the
Sendero product, you can.
One interesting feature of this program is the ability to browse
areas using sides of the street. When GPS is live, this feature
doesnt work, or doesnt work as well, but when browsing in
virtual mode, its really interesting.
I like to get a flavor of a neighborhood before I go there and
these maps do allow for that plus route planning. You can then
save the routes in the Braille Note for review as you go. This
would be handy in Manhattan with the canyon effect.
Its truly an awesome time to be blind and have so many tools at
our disposal.
