[nagdu] Scrounging?

Hi, Rox'e',

LOL yeah... goat and Hoover hybrid *sighs*

Ironically, she's better in restaurants than in grocery stores... her weaknesses are apple cores, bread, popcorn, and chips... at least she has good taste!

What kind of things do you do when doing food refusal? Perhaps Jenn's just getting bored with it... so any viewpoints are welcome!

Hi Deryl,
I am empathizing with your problem! I'm retiring my Doberman mix who doesn't care at all about food and now training a lab who I'm convinced is some kind of goat and hoover vacuum hybrid. She will eat anything that doesn't eat her first.
I do use a gental leader, especially in stores and restaurants. We work on food refusal almost daily, but I've come to the conclusion that the gl will probably be a part of our equipment toolbox for the entirity of our working relationship. This is because food is so motivating and reinforcing for her that management is going to be the best way to handle it. Every dog has their issue, and I think it's great that you're working on the behavior, and she may catch on, however, she may always require some management with a head collar, and that doesn't make you a bad handler or her less awesome.
I wish I had some kind of miracle technique for you, but my best advice is to keep putting her into as many training situations as you can, with food refusal being the goal, and use the tools you have to manage it when you are out and cannot control your environment— especially in places where there is opportunity for scrounging. The goal should be to keep her from getting food, because every time she gets something, that just gives her more of a reason to keep trying for more. Which is why my rule is always use the gl whenever I have any doubts at all, and work the behavior as much as I can at another time when I can control things.
GOOD luck!
