[nagdu] guide dogs in hotels

Another thing to consider is that water can have an effect on a dog's intestinal functions. Even if the water is clean, it is different water than the dog is accustomed and, therefore, may cause loose stools. Whenever traveling, I always relieve my dog more frequently so as to avoid embarrassing accidents.

I want to share an off-topic funny. In one of his stand-up routines, Howie Mandel, who is very well known for his improvisation, asked and audience member what she did for a living. She replied she was a delivery room nurse. He inquired about why they give women enemas before they deliver and she responded it was so they did not have a horrible accident. Howie then said, "So, the next time a cop pulls me over I can tell him, 'I know I've had too much to drink but don't worry officer, I had an enema before I left so I wouldn't have a horrible accident!"

Fraternally yours,
Marion Gwizdala

Thanks so much, Julie! The water is a great tip!

I am definitely not going to leave York alone in the room. He is still young and very attached to me.

That’s a great idea about the relief breaks as well!

And thanks to everyone who has helped with this thread! I really appreciate hearing about these situations from more experienced handlers.

My older guide will sometimes refuse to drink the water, especially when we travel to larger cities where there is stuff in the water. I generally bring tap water from home for him. My younger guide doesn't seem to mind the water.

This will be my first time “away from home” with York, and I welcome any travel tips you have. Are there any do’s and don’ts of staying in hotels? Should I contact the hotel in advance to say that York is coming with me? Do you bring a crate for your dog, or just a bed?
