[nagdu] Working in the Snow

Omg, Darrel; that is one of the funniest guide dog stories I have heard
lately, and she was right, in a way, as the pedestrian needed to move, so
you could get by. <giggle>
Don't you just love these dogs?

Last week Jenny barked at a pedestrian who was tying his shoe in the middle
of the sidewalk. Jenny couldn't go around him (to the right was a BIG
snowbank and to the left was a very busy avenue). Only thing she thought she
could do was to bark at him. I could picture the wheels turning: You're
down at my level, and you're in my way. MOVE!

Hi Larry,

Very good; she may realize that is what you want, in time, but they
are obstacle avoidant--which how they were trained--so I think Raben had
some good ideas about how to train what you want without spoiling training
you still need.
I am constantly amazed at how adaptable these dogs really are given
a chance; when Huck makes a "mistake"--because that is how he was
trained--I'll say, very gently, "not that way little boy" and try to show
him what I do want and then lavishly praise3.

Exactly! For example yesterday. Holly and I were out in the snow and cold.
She found a clear path but it turned out it wasn't going where I needed to
go. I had to stop, listen and find the right way. It wasn't as clear but we
managed because I listened and refocused on the busy street I line up with.
Holly was taking the safest path but not the right one.
