Hi fellow Lister's, Mardi again. I have changed many of the rescued dogs
names, providing they came to us with names. Some people give their dogs the
most rediculous names,ie. Baby Girl, Sweetie pie,Woolfy.Well you get the
idea. When I bought Nala from a breeder, Her name was Pepper.I gave her a
Lakota name. Wakinyan nis Nala, pronounced Wok in yon neesh Nala. It
means, "Alone in Thunder'. It was thundering and raining on the day I got
her and she looked so alone and scared. When Shaman came to me from the
woman who rescued him from the shelter, she was calling him Fritz. The name
on his paper work was Duke. He had been an owner turn in to the shelter. I
decided to call him Shaman. When I got Neechee, which is spelled N i c i in
Lakota, her name was Cleo. I had already had a dog many years before with
that name and decided to change her name. Nici in Lakota means "For You".
There is a story behind that name and if any one wants to know about it,
just let me know. When I change the name of a dog that has a previous name,I
call the dog by using both names. Come Pepper- Nala,Sit Fritz- Shaman,
Forward Cleo-Neechee. I eventually drop the first name and just use the new
name when I feel that the dog has had enough time to get used to the second
name. They usually transition fairly fast.It works and I think that it makes
it easier for the dog to get used to the new name. Mardi and Shaman and
Neechee.
