[nagdu] Haltis and Scavenging WAS Retiring a dog early

Agreed, Raven!

I've been working with Jenny on it, and like I said it's gotten SO much better! I always keep the Halti in my coat pocket so that if I notice she's starting to head down that path, I can put it on her and she understands why.

At home she seems to do much better. Last weekend, hubby dropped a mushroom on the floor right in front of where she was laying, and she looked at it and ignored it - got HUGE praise for that one!

Also been looking at your posts re correction/positive reinforcement, and have been slowly implementing the re-working strategy into our routine. As an example, Jenny likes to take corners quite tight, so when it happens, I say "watch the corner," then (where possible) we turn around, take the corner again, and she gets a ton of praise for doing it right... she and I are working MUCH better together!

Hi Daryl,
I'm glad the Halti is working for you! Many people are very anti head
collar. It's good to see you tried it and are having success.
Just remember that to work on scavenging and sniffing, it's important
to practice at home with things like "leave it" and teaching your dog
how to react to, or ignore, food on the floor or ground without the
Halti on. The leg work is certainly worth it. I have taught extremely
nosy beagles, black labs, and pitbulls to ignore food via self
restraint or on cue. It took more time than it did with other dogs,
but they get the hang of it.
Guiding Eyes actually issues the Halti among other collars with each
dog. Or, at least they did when I attended. Everyone doesn't need one
all the time, but I have found myself in situations where the Halti
was useful.
