To measure your dog's neck for a collar, measure the circumference with a
seamstresses measuring tape pulled tight and add an inch or 2.
The rule is that you should be able to comfortably tuck 2 fingers into the
collar around the dog's neck. Make sure you measure the part of the neck
where you want the collar to sit, whether that is the mid-part or closer up
under the ears.
The Golden Guy's neck is 17 inches around the mid-part, so I always get an
18-inch collar.
