I expect what happened is that at least some part of people's donations were 
given to GEB, and the guy went to class in the usual way.  It just sounds 
better to say the dog was a gift.  Arguably true, as all GEB dogs could be 
described as a gift, since the recipient does not pay for his or her dog.
