I completely agree with Tracy and Raven here... embarrassing! And grrrr on passengers who don't speak up!
Checking with your feet? I think I will have to try that!

Whoa! Okay. When checking if a seat is occupied, I have found that
checking with my feet instead of my hands is more foolproof. If I feel
forward with my feet, it's much less invasive.
It bothers me to the nth degree when a person in a seat you approach
doesn't speak up, or when they do, they don't suggest an alternative
seat. Grrrrrr!
