[nagdu] Noise at the corner

When I used to work at GDB, I lived in san Rafael, a couple blocks from
campus and could walk to work every day. But my nearest corner on that route
was probably one of the busiest intersections, with the most frightening
island, only a pole in the middle of the intersection, in San Rafael. There
was a strip mall a block from me in one direction with a major grocery
store, and a regular mall on the route to GDB. The time of day I was walking
to work was when deliveries were being made, by huge noisy trucks. Sometimes
I just could not hear the other traffic, and never felt the crossing was
safe enough to risk crossing till I could hear. I can remember having to
wait through several lights. I did try changing the time I would walk to
work to try to avoid the delivery trucks but I usually got caught by a
couple at least. I hated that intersection.

Subject: [nagdu] Noise at the corner

I am having more trouble these days hearing traffic when there are loud
noises around, like an idling truck, a food truck generator, or a bus
zooming off down the street. I don't know if it's my hearing, or just
that cars are quieter, but there are times I have to wait out a light
change because I just can't tell what's happening. And, if the noise
isn't going away, I have to take my best guess or wait until someone
happens along who hears me asking for help. If there was a Miracle Ear
that damped down loud noises and amped up quiet ones, I'd get it.
Surely I can't be the only person with this problem. What do other people
do?
Tracy
