Depending on the largeness of whatever you are buying, and how much you
can comfortably carry in a backpack, there is your answer.
I don't much care for any of those contrivances with multiple
compartments for this purpose. I purchased a single cavity backpack
from an Army Surplus store. As an example using my pack, I can manage a
15 can pack of beer, five pounds of carrots, the same of potatoes, about
5 pounds of various meats, a few canned goods, and a few other things.
I have a cloth shopping bag for breads and other crushables. Without
the afford-mentioned liquids, I'm able to load even more groceries.
Since I buy in bulk as much as possible, I bribe a friend (free
breakfast) when purchasing my years supply of bathroom tissue, Kleenex,
laundry and dish soap.
Fortunately, I have no physical issues.
