[nagdu] Why Not Ownership?

I'm always perplexed when this topic comes up. So many things about the use of a guide dog are said to be a matter of personal preference. Why is it so difficult for ownership to be viewed in the same way? If you feel immediate ownership is important, go to a school that grants it. If you don't mind waiting a year to receive ownership, then you can go to a school with such an ownership policy.

We're adults, fully capable of making decisions for ourselves. Why is it not okay for people to decide that ownership isn't a big deal? Personally, I feel no different now that I own my dog than I did when the school owned my dog. My personal worth is not affected in the least.

If my school suddenly began to treat me in ways I didn't like, I would have the right to go to another school. We do have a lot of choices when it comes to schools.

In most cases, personal preference is respected, but, when it comes to ownership, it seems that only one point of view is acceptable. We hear about all these things that could happen to people who don't own their dogs. Well, where are those people? Why aren't they speaking out? Many will say it's because they're afraid of retaliation, but, certainly, that's not true for all of them. And, once these people speak out, other people wishing to work with guide dogs can decide, based on all the information available to them, which schools are worth consideration.
