I believe the law states that a request for a reasonable accommodation has
to be made, but the request can not be denied.

When I initially approached my then supervisor I think I stated it something
like, "I'd like to bring my guide dog to work". It's not quite a question,
but not exactly me laying down how things are going to go down either. My
supervisor said something like, "okay". And that was the end of that.
Nothing was documented, nothing in writing, no lengthy conversation, no PSA
to the rest of the employees...nothing but me and the dog, well and getting
my work done! *smile*

My supervisor is a lawyer, he knew he couldn't deny my request, but
appreciated that I was polite about it. Honestly though, he didn't care.
Back then other people brought their pet dogs to work on occasion. He knew
and didn't have a problem with it, until there was a pile on the floor and
that was the end of that. Too bad, because I think having well behaved dogs
at work is a good thing.

Given my particular work and the atmosphere there, I think showing up with
Jetta will be just fine. Any bets on how long it takes someone to notice
that I have a different dog? *smile*

Hi Steve,

I do understand your logic, but it makes it sound like Julie couldn't have
her dog on the premises unless she asks, and I don't believe she should have
had to ask the first time; to me, this is a slippery slope I don't care to
go down myself, but of course, everyone views this kind of thing
differently.
And if Julie decided to ask, and they said no? Back in the day, when I
thought about working in a dark room, I wasn't allowed to bring my dog, even
though I explained how we could avoid possibly allergic patients; we didn't
have the rights we now enjoy. So, because I wanted to work, I left my dog
home; I hate it and only stayed for the training, but my dog was being
harassed while I was off the premises which caused problems for the rest of
our relationship.

Hi Darla,
I am not arguing with the fact that she has previously requested this
accommodation, but there are new layers in place here. Maybe it is not
necessarily a new request, but rather an informational update as the last
thing anyone wants is for a new supervisor to not be in the loop with what
previously happened as far as a formal accommodation request goes. It is
first, a common courtesy as an employee to bring this new information
forward and second, just simply good practice to have a face to face to
discuss any accommodation changes in general. This way, it's documented
which really does have a lot of leverage. Hope this explains a little
better.

Thanks,
Steve

What? Why should she ask for an accommodation in the first place? She has
worked with a guide dog before, but if she wishes to do so, I don't have an
issue, but sometimes, if you make noise, you draw attention you might not
want.

Julie,
Your best option would be to bring this to your supervisor. It is still an
obligation on your part, and although you did request for your previous
guide, this is not your previous guide nor this is the same supervisor.
This way, your backend is covered and it is documented.

I actually agree. You don't tell someone when you are getting a new cane. If
they ask what is going on, then you can explain, but, sometimes, giving
advanced notice just gives people an opportunity to make trouble. Like you
said, it's not like you are going to have both dogs at work at once.

personally, i would just show up with a dog. but, that's just me. it's
none of anybody's concern how my dog is being trained, by whom, or whatever.
but, that's just me.
legally, it's a guide dog so, i can have it there with me.

My work schedule is flexible, so I could work in my office the morning and
with Jetta in the afternoon or vice versa. I could also work more hours
earlier in the week and spend the necessary weekdays with Meghan and Jetta.
All that to say, I'm not planning on taking any time off of work.

I would be bringing my guide dog to work, it was a different person than my
current supervisor. My supervisor is a lawyer, if that makes a difference
in regard to legal knowledge.

would you just show up with the new dog and go on about your business?
Would you inform your supervisor that you will be bringing a different dog?
Would you re-request a guide dog as a reasonable accommodation?
