[nagdu] guide dog school problem

What is the deadline for deciding whether or not you will be going to
college? If the deadline is not yet, , and you have not been accepted yet,
then I would not give them your decision yet. What if you don't get accepted
at either of the guide dog schools? What will you do then? Yes, it is going
to take time to make it where you will get accepted if you are not
accepted, but that is not so time consuming that you can't do anything else.
You really need to consider all of the possible outcomes. If you don't get
accepted, how long are you going to work on getting a guide dog? Until you
get one? If you don't go to college for a while because you are working on
getting a guide dog, what will you do instead?

Hi,
I submitted the guide dogs of America application a few weeks ago.
I got the required medical forms filled out a couple of weeks ago.
I'm not sure on dates.
The only thing that Guide Dogs of America needs is my video of me walking.
I have submitted the guide dogs of the desert application a couple of days
ago.
They want a ophthomogy form filled out.
I don't see a opthomologist.
That's the thing that's holding me back from applying at Guide Dogs of the
Desert.
I've read over all of the emails that I have been posted on the list.
And after much thinking and considering, I've decided to put college on hold
for right now and work on getting my guide dog first.
It makes sense.
I have a question: I've been in contact with both Guide Dogs of America and
Guide Dogs of the Desert.
Guide Dogs of the Desert says that California state law says that I have to
have the ophthalmologist report filled out and sent to them.
While Guide Dogs of America didn't say anything about that.
I'm confused.
I don't see an ophthalmologist.
How should I go about fixing this?
I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
John Sanders

John,

A couple of things. First, some of the things that you are telling us are
not making sense and are contradicting each other. What exactly has
happened, in order, with applications and acceptance?
Second, if there is a possibility that you might go to get a dog in August,
you really need to stop and think this over more. Yes, things that cannot be
avoided happen, and colleges make exceptions, but I feel that this is
different. You cannot miss four weeks of a class and still pass it, at least
not with a half way decent grade, unless it's a class where there is only
one class a week with a really light work load. Even if you can retake the
class, do you really want to have to? Retaking a class often means paying
for more time at college--more money that people probably don't want to
spend. Even if you did somehow work out where you could take that time off,
it still is not a good idea. You will need time to bond with your dog, and
college is not the place to do it. Even if you know the campus, there is
going to be a lot to get used to for the dog. The first few months that you
are with the dog, it is really important that you and only you handle the
dog. Students at college don't always respect the "don't pet my dog" rules,
particularly if they are going through pet withdrawal. Also, if you have
different classes at different times on different days, the
feeding/relieving schedule may not be the same every day. If at all
possible, it's much better to start where you can feed and relieve on a
consistent schedule. There are many other reasons. In short, JMHO, if you
somehow work out that you can get a dog in August and then immediately go
back to college, I think that you will be hurting both your relation with
your dog and your education--haste makes waste.

Hi,
I haven't been excepted to any of the Guide Dog Training schools.
The forms for the Excelerated mobility training program are being sent to me
in the mail.
The application for the program is no longer available on the leader dog
website.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
John Sanders

Have you been excepted to any of the Geico schools yet? And is the leader
dog program with the cane? Also, you might again want to talk to an advisor
and see if he/she can help you!
