Danielle,
Honestly, there are so many options for natural flea and tick
preventatives that there is no need for commercial products Not that
there ever was in the first place.
Research Cedarcide, Wondercide, and Herbal Bug-X. Neem oil and organic
cold-pressed coconut oil repel insects, too. Also look into the flea
and tick tags that repel bugs. There's mixed reviews on those.
In addition, there are a myriad of therapeutic grade essential oils
that repel insects:
citronella, cypress, lavender, lemongrass, lemon eucalyptus,
peppermint, rose geranium, rosemary, four thieves, and the list goes
on. Just be sure to get your essential oils from a reputable source.
One good company is Young Living, who sells most oils for exorbitant
prices because they are of the purest quality. I personally purchase
mine from Edens Garden. They are much more affordable, high quality,
and work perfectly.
I have an entire document listing natural preventatives that I can
send to you if you like. Just post your email here since it's no
longer possible to get people's email addresses off these lists.
Some people shy away from natural methods because most of them are
less convenient than the poisons. Natural preventatives have to be
applied more often, anywhere from twice a day to once every 1 or 2
weeks. I am personally more afraid of poisoning my dog than I will
ever be of some insect.
Fortunately, my dog is healthy enough that I don't have to apply
anything to him to repel pests. And there is low humidity in my part
of Michigan, so there's not swarms of mosquitoes all over the place
either. We work in the city and play in the woods, and I have yet to
find a tick on him.
