Hello list,
please does anyone know of a mailing list or online forum where mobility issues are being diskussed?
I'm mostly interested in learning new routes with a guide dog and I have things to ask.
Thank you for your help in advance.
With kind regards
Maria

> Yah, that happens! Folks think we can't get lost with our dogs! Well, more than once I have been out wandering on dog pilot and every so often I have to take over and stop us from going somewhere I'd rather not go! For example, I have been wandering around the mall and suddenly find myself in front of the pet store! Jee, how'd that happen and who was controlling our path?

>> This is all so true!
>> I will, however, say that my guide dog will get me lost because I have not been paying attention or she wants to take an initiative, but also unlost. She has gotten me home during a night with freezing rain so heavy that the buses shut down, kept me safe through a parking lot which would've freaked me out with a cane.
>> This having been said, no school worth their salt should accept anyone who cannot navigate moderately safely with a cane; nor should they accept anyone who has enough vision to navigate completely on their own.
>>
>> This having been said, there are certain places I hated going with a cane. There is a mcDonald's near my house, but to get there I would have to cross an 8-lane busy road, with an island at one point. I am a good cane traveler, but that intersection doesn't run straight. I never wanted to walk it with a cane, but with a dog it seems simple and easy.

>> This is true that you do need to have a good sense of direction and know where you are going. The other day, we went to a restaurant that we go to a couple times a month. It has windows that go all the way down the sides of the building. Well, Pascal started to pull the right and tried to take me in through the window. I knew that we weren't close to the entrance, so I directed him forward. It was pretty funny. But, if I didn't have good mobility skills, I could have gotten very turned around. Sometimes my boy has a little too much initiative, LOL.

>> I hope that this does not come across as harsh, but this is pretty much the long and short of it. Like a cane, a guide dog is a mobility aid.
>> Occasionally, you will come across a really smart dog who can find his/her way home when blocks away, but it is not something that is guaranteed with every dog. Your responsibilities when traveling with a dog are much the same as when you travel with a cane. You have to know where you are and how to get to where you are going. You have to read the traffic. If you cannot get from one place to another without getting lost or turned around or crossing the street at the wrong time multiple times, then you probably will not be accepted to get a dog.

>> Hi,
>> I have a question: I talked with Pilot dogs yesterday and had asked them about how the admissions process wsa going.
>> I was told that the committee had already met.
>> I had been told that there is no set date as to when they will be meeting again.
>> I have a question: I do apologize if this is off-topic; so please forgive me. I didn't know where else to post this. I do have epilepcy and I did find out that I had sustained a head Injury.
>> Is the excellerated mobility training program at Leader dog a fast pased Mobility training program?
>> I'm supposed to have a evaluation on my mobility skills to see whether or not I'm even ready for a guide dog yet.
>> I hope to hear from you soon.
>> Sincerely,
>> John Sanders
