[nagdu] crate vs tie-down

Thanks, Cindy,
BC/AB guide dogs does not use crates, unless you count the roomy ones in the back of the training/transport van. I have a large amount of space in my house, but I still wouldn't want to have to put Jenny in a crate...

And, Valerie, I take exception to the idea that you wouldn't want someone over to your house if their dog was not crate trained. Not all dogs are comfortable in crates for a variety of reasons, and IMHO one can do more harm than good if one pushes the dog into accepting a crate unnecessarily.

I'm sorry, Valerie, but it isn't about whether her dog accepts crate
training. I think that the crate takes up a lot of space. Those of us who
were trained at The Seeing Eye always used tie downs--a relatively short
chain nights--for the dogs. We were asked to keep the dog on a leash for the
first two weeks at home until the dog had adjusted some to its new
surroundings and its schedule, and then to slowly let it have run of the
house. Now the school is using crates on the premises and encouraging all to
buy a crate. I, for instance, would have two large crates in that situation
and would want both dogs in the bedroom with us. This would create serious
overcrowding. That's why I continue to use tiedown. But all of that said, I
would say Krokus is very well crate trained.

Hi,

You're a little harsh on crate training, don't you think?

I can see how tie down would be useful, and I can see how crates can be
cumbersome, but crate training is supposed to mimmick the den that a mother
dog would proide to her pups, so it's easy for the dog to understand. I
don't know of many dogs who tie their pups to trees.

Second, self discipline is taught. As puppies, dogs ar going to grab things
unless they're told what is and is not acceptable to grab. There is no
quick fix for this, only consistancy on your part in teaching the dog.

Third, What if your dog is sick and you need to put her somewhere? a crate
is the best place for this. Or, if there is another dog who is too playful
(and your dog wants to be left alone) a crate works.

That being said, I think both crates and tie downs have their place, and
dogs shoud be taught to accept both.

I personally don't like dogs coming to my house if theyre not crate trained,
nor woud i take a dog to someones house who was not crate trained.

I dont mean to sound harsh, but if your dog doesn't accept crate training,
is more the fault of the owner, not the dog.

tie-down, or used it in class, did not grab everything they could reach.
They had some idea of self-discipline. I am buying a crate, under protest,
because I'm just tired of having to constantly watch Krokus and see if he's
got hold of something he shouldn't. There's no where in my house I can tie
him down totally out of reach of anything. This was never a problem before.
I wanted to try tie-down in class, but my trainer always forgot to give me
an extra tie-down, and the one I was issued was too short to actually use.
