[nagdu] Crossing Streets

Personally, I'd call the school now. Traffic is nothing to mess with.
I have sometimes stopped the dog if I heard someone running the light, and
it didn't mean his traffic training was broken, but, if I felt I couldn't
cross a busy street safely, I'd be on the phone to the school right away.

Hi Daryl and Sandra. About three weeks ago, we were crossing a busy street
and a car came barreling through the intersection. A guy yelled for us and
I had to drag her back with me. She had started to go faster, but we could
not make it. So, that got her. I am going to try the trainer suggestions.
And, if it does not work, I will call for a visit. I have started working
with her on the smaller streets (she was doing so-so on those) and it
worked. I am going to take my time, not stress her to cross busy streets,
and build her back up for busy streets. I will call the school if this does
not work. Thanks for the ideas.

Elise,

If Becky does not respond to the trainers suggestions, I'd get right back on
the phone and ask for a visit. You are a very new team so you should work
with your school to resolve the problems as soon as possible. For whatever
reason she is very reluctant to cross busy streets. Has she had a scary
situation while crossing? Something has obviously taken away her confidence
in the street. I went through this with my last dog. It took her trainer
and I several days to work with her to build up her confidence again. Good
luck.

Elise,

I think your trainer has good advice, but I also think it's important to
figure out why she is hesisant. Was she like this during training, or is
this a new behavior? Does Becky seem to be afraid of the traffic? Is she
shaking or whining, or just not wanting to move forward? Are light posts
near her a temptation for sniffing/scavenging?

Hope we can help.

Daryl

2015 15:00:46 -0600 (MDT) Subject: [nagdu] Crossing Streets Hi, everyone. I
need a little help with Becky again. We made it through our first month
doing pretty well. For some reason, she is having issues crossing busy
streets. She barely wants to go down the curb. Usually, she will plant her
60 pounds and will not budge until I coax her. My trainer said to give a
little praise on the down curb and give her super duper praise on the up
curb. This will give her a target to get a lot of praise and an extra treat.
I have been doing this for a week or so. She is a lot better in residential
streets (not really the problem.) But, the busy intersection crossings at a
light is her problem area. Does anyone have any ideas other than what my
trainer told me? Thanks. Elise and Becky (soon to cross streets easily)
