[nagdu] Length of harness handle?

Becky,

Great idea! I might try that :)

I talked to one of the trainers today, following up on Jenny's progress with barking. She mentioned that I should be getting a followup visit set up in the next 2-3 weeks, so she will make sure that trainer brings several harness handles. Never thought of tying something further up the handle, but have lifted up the handle so that Jenn's close to me, and we both seem to work best that way.

I never really considered it because in the snow, Jenn has done great navigating the ice, snow and melt, but now that all that crap is gone, she just wants to GOOOOOO! She did the same in new York, and settled down on a shorter leash or closer to me with the harness.

I liked the shorter handle with my long second dog. His ribs were right at my knee. He loved touching me and I him, smile. Jake is such an independent little cuss. Working him yesterday with his confident movements make me realize again that I really do have the best harness handle for me to use with him. Maybe tie some strong rope about half way down the harness and grab that and see if the shorter handle is good for you. Just an idea. Hey, Becky, At the start of training, we did try several handles, some shorter and others longer... btu in the past 18 months it's just been something I've noticed Just enny specifically; she likes either being WAY ahead of me or right in beside me, which is why I think the shorter harness handle might be a better solution. :) Daryl ----- Original Message ----- From: Becky Frankeberger <b.butterfly at comcast.net> To: 'Daryl Marie' <crazymusician at shaw.ca>, 'NAGDU Mailing List, the National Association of Guide Dog Users' <nagdu at nfbnet.org> Sent: Mon, 13 Apr 2015 09:13:27 -0600 (MDT) Subject: RE: [nagdu] Length of harness handle? Wow, at Seeing Eye, I had several harnesses to try out. I have lower back problems so the longer handles made Jake pull not so strong. His body length is kind of short compared to my last dog, so the offset works well for us. But it was so neat trying out those harnesses to see what worked best for us so we could be the most comfortable working together. Seeing Eye has many harness designs for hand injured, and people like me with significant back issues. But if I had an opportunity, I would like to try a straight shorter handle. But I do like being almost a step behind my beautiful boy. So I don't know exactly what I need, so we will keep moving forward, smile. Becky and his royal fluffiness, dats me! Toothy grin. Love Jake. -----Original Message----- From: nagdu [mailto:nagdu-bounces at nfbnet.org] On Behalf Of Daryl Marie via nagdu Sent: Monday, April 13, 2015 4:54 AM To: nagdu at nfbnet.org Subject: [nagdu] Length of harness handle? Hey, guys! Jenny has always had a pretty strong pull, but I notice she does MUCH better at keeping with my pace when she is walking closer beside me rather than more out in front. A friend of mine has a guide dog harness where the handle is only about halfway down his back, so he's only about a half-step in front of her. I was thinking about requesting a shorter harness handle to see if that helps, so Jenny and I are not in this crazy power struggle over how fast I want to go. Currently, her harness handle is basically right at her bum. How long are your harness handles? Do you think this might be worth trying?
