[nagdu] Fake Service Dogs

I owner trained three dogs and had the last one privately trained.  I am a 
complete supporter of the right to owner train, but...sometimes I'm really 
horrified at the behavior of some owner trainers.  Perhaps I'm overly 
sensitive here.  I don't know.  I have an extremely low tolerance for being 
embarrassed.  If one of my dogs does anything the least bit out of line, I'm 
addressing the issue, re evaluating what I should have done differently, 
deciding what remedial training needs to be done, strategizing where I can 
work on it unobtrusively and then I go over all of it again, just to be sure 
I didn't inadvertently miss something.

I've not run into owner trained guide dogs that were embarrassingly out of 
control.  Perhaps blind people take it more seriously?  A badly trained 
guide dog is a serious hazard to life and limb.  Perhaps that's what makes 
the difference?  I don't know.  I guess I wish people would just be 
respectful and use some common sense without needing  a bunch of rules and 
regulations compelling them to do the decent thing.

Am I imagining it or is everyone and his brother claiming to have a
disability and brinnging aa service animal or supposed one in places. It
used to be we had to go through quite an effort to gain training with our
guide or service dogs and then feel entitled to bring them with us virtually
everywhere.

In order to be a service dog it must be trained to do a task.  In the case
of PTSD, for example, it may help the woman get out of a situation that is
causing extreme stress or protect her from other people if they are pushing
in too close.  If the dog does not have a task then it is an assistance or
emotional support dog and that is not covered under ADA.  If it is business
owners who are asking you then you can tell them they can ask if the dog is
trained to do a task and what task is it trained to do. I have seen guide
dogs that were trained at the best schools in the U.S. and they aren't
behaving well either.  Just because a dog is misbehaving doesn't mean it
isn't trained.  There are people who do not maintain t he training once they
get home.
