[nagdu] "what's his name?"

I don't like giving out my dog's name because he responds very well to
it. The first thing people do when you give the name is repeat it.
Then my dog looks up or might step toward them. I don't want that. I
don't want anyone trying to give him directions, or calling to him to
say "hi" while we're working. No no no.

I don't typically give out my dog's name unless I am somewhere that I
probably won't return to, or if I am speaking with someone I will
probably never see again. If it's a place I frequent, I give an alias,
Celestial Seasonings. People's reactions are hilarious, but I can
deliver it with a straight face, and it gets them off my back. A lot
of people don't remember his real name anyway, so it makes no
difference.
The only exception is at LDB where I work. I will tell people there my
dog's name because everyone there is aware of not calling on or
speaking to working dogs since working dogs are all over the place.

I don't usually use my dog's name before commands unless he is
distracted by something or he has made an error. Other than that, I
can give verbal commands during a conversation with friends while
walking, and he knows I'm talking to him because of my tone of voice
and inflection.
