[nagdu] "what's his name?"

I generally tell people my dog's name when they ask because I
personally find it more inconvenient to explain why I won't. Thai is
very responsive to his name when I use it, but not when others say it.
He will either ignore people or react to them regardless of whether
they use his name in most circumstances. There have been a few times I
gave a false name to an overly interested stranger, but this is the
exception rather than the rule. I don't usually use his name before
guide commands unless he is distracted or confused. I often say his
name when people try to talk to him because it simultaneously teaches
him to look to me for direction when others try to distract him as
well as removing the reward of Thai's reaction for the other person.
Most people tend to stop trying to talk to him when they realize they
are not getting rewarded, although there are a few that get offended
and become even more persistent. A lot of the principles I apply to
dog training also seems to work on other people. When it comes to
friends and people I see on a regular basis, I have found that most
people who actually remember his name are also the people that
remember not to interact with him. The only people I have ever had
much of a problem with giving directions to my dog are some family
members and it's not as if I can keep his name a secret from them.
