Welcome to the list, Diane.  I have Retinitis Pigmentosa with very 
limited central vision.  I just received my first guide, Claire Rose, 
from Guide Dog Foundation in Smithtown, NY.   I had a great uncle who 
lived near you in Shoreham by Sea.  He passed away some time ago.  He 
was paralyzed from the waist down during WWI and used a three wheeled 
wheel chair with handles that he pumped.  He married his nurse and I 
visited them in 1959 at the age of 19.  He could keep up with me on my 
bicycle out on the road.
