[nagdu] Puppy raising, taking the pup in public

Hi all,
I got my dog from Pilot about 3 months ago, and during a lecture, the conversation was brought up about puppy-raising and different do's and don'ts that the school prefers, and I just flat-out asked, "What do you allow the puppy-raisers to do and what do you encourage or discourage?" They gave me a little bit of a vague answer from what I'm used to hearing from a school, saying just that they do not really tell their puppy-raisers what to do or not to do, but one thing they are strict on is that they don't allow the raisers to take their pups inside, which I was surprised by. I could tell that something was amiss because my dog was a little skiddish around large crowds of people, even though she'd been with someone for a year. I was just surprised by it because I feel that bringing the dogs inside places lets the raiser expose the dog to the sights, smells, and sounds of buildings. They said at Pilot that since the ADA doesn't legally cover pups in training, that they felt it better to let the instructor do the exposing once the adult dog gets back to the school. I think though, that dogs who are raised up with as much exposure as possible will be more stable and can focus more on their work in stead of having to focus on exposure as well as training. I had to expose her to certain things that I feel she really could have already been exposed to. This is not to say, however, that Pilot puppy raisers do not do a fantastic job or that dogs raised by Pilot don't work out. I'm not saying that. But I do think that pups raised being exposed to the inside of buildings of all kinds will have better trainability and better be able to guide someone, rather than being nervous because they have never been in a large crowd before. Just my 2 cents there.
