Hi,
I have not contacted Pilot dogs no.
I will be contacting the commission for the blind in Michigan and tell
them why I need the lessons for mobility to get a dog.
Hopefully the commission will put this in my educational development plan.
I don't know how to go about doing the apeel process.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
John Sanders

Hi John:

If you have a hard time remembering routes, here are a few suggestions.
Have someone record the route for you. Then you can take the recording with
you to replay to refresh your memory. If you read Braille, write out the
route and take it with you. Some people break down long routes into shorter
ones and learn it in parts. They work on the first part and back home.
Then add short distances until you have learned the entire route. Have you
explained to state rehab why you want the extra O&M lessons? Maybe if they
know it is so you can learn specific routes to qualify for the dog, they
will agree. If they deny you, there is always an appeals process. I know
this doesn't happen quickly but, in the end it would be worth the fight.
Finally, what was your status with Pilot Dogs. I know you gave Molly back
but, have they refused to try you with an older calmer dog? It might be
worth a phone call to talk to them. After all, they accepted you without
all this crazy requirement of so many routes. I wish you luck in gaining
your independence and confidence.

Sandra

Hi,
I'm starting to walk a route to a small store called Quality Dairy.
The person who agreed to help me is happy to do it.
Once I told him that Leader dog requires you to do three routes, they had
said that they are not willing to help me with those because they don't have
the time or the ability to do that.
This is a good friend of mine.
He is in his mid twenties.
I have a tough time remembering routes.
I'm slowly starting to work on that.
I had a seizure a long time ago.
I also had brain bleeds when I wsa born.
That did not help any.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
John Sanders

John,
Not relying on Sighted people all the time is a great goal. However, it may
be better for you to use a cane and learn to rely upon yourself first. A
dog and person are a team. Before you can direct a dog, you need to be able
to know where you are and how to get where you want to go, and the only way
to get good at that is to spend time with your cane and improve the skill of
relying upon yourself and the tools you have so that you can become
confident.
