Exactly. As I see it, if you have allergies and you get into public service
then you have to either acclimate or do something or don't be in public
where you'll periodically expose yourself to them. For example you wouldn't
work in a groomers shop! That would be silly! Depending on how bad the
allergic reaction might be, it could in theory be activated if someone had
dog hair on clothing or hands. I always call the cabs around here and tell
them I have a dog. Partly because I know my company will try and not send
out someone that might have issues with dogs but also because we have a
shared ride system and I want to make sure they don't try to put a bus load
of folks in one car and try and pick me and Holly up as well. I try to be
sensitive when I can but, its not always possible. The person who is
allergic has to take some responsibility as well.

Aleeha,

First, you are NOT selfish. There may be times we all adapt and compromise a
bit. However, when it comes to getting a ride from someone who puts
themselves out to "serve the public" then that person needs to abide by the
law and by the moral code of decency. As we all know, allergies do not trump
our access. It is not about the dog, it is about our right to travel with
our dogs as the means we choose to use.

Second, those who call you selfish clearly do not value you and your rights
at the same high level as others. If you were not at the National NFB
convention nor heard President Riccobono's banquet address I suggest that
you go to the National web site and listen to it. It will put the comments
you get from others into perspective and empower you to respond
appropriately.

Hello all,
Can you guys weigh in on this? I have been severely criticized and called
selfish for my opinion on this matter. This especially has to do with denial
of access to uber vehicles, but could also have implications elsewhere. 
Let's start with a hypothetical situation. I request a ride with the Uber
app. As I do not think it is necessary, I do not inform the driver that I am
accompanied by my dog. The driver shows up and says that they cannot take my
dog because they or someone in their family has a severe allergy to dog
dander, to the point that their throat closes up. 
In my opinion, this person shouldn't be driving anyway because anyone could
be carrying pet dander on their clothing. My dog poses just as much a risk
as the next person if my dog is well groomed. I believe that everyone should
follow the law. Now, I'm told that this view makes me close minded and
selfish. I have a similar view on fear of dogs. I'm told that we are all
being close minded and spewing rhetoric when we talk about the Uber lawsuit,
but that is a topic for another post. What do you all think?
