Well, there was a time that I requested a female shepherd but I got a male yellow lab.  I had him for over 8 hears.  I loved that dog, so I'd also trust the judgment of the instructors.

I agree with what others have said but I have always requested labs and never had any problems.  I would take the dog they think is best for me if they asked if I would accept another breed.  Luckily, my school has more labs than anything else.
