Yes Debby, it does happen more often than taking them to a shelter.Dogs are
dumped on the street a lot here. That is why I got into rescuing and
fostering. I am not taking in any more dogs now,but I do have 2 permanent
fosters. They are unadoptable. They are both "don't touch me dogs". Myah
was left in a sled dog compound,in Alaska,to starve to death with 200 other
huskies. The ones that were still alive when a rescue found them, were
surviving by eating the dead dogs and eating their own poop.7 were brought
to Arizona and put in foster homes to be adopted. There are still 2 in
Phoenix and Myah here in Tucson, with me that have not been adopted. They
have been in foster care for 5 years now. No one wants to take the time to
work with these dogs or get to know them and adopt them. I am the only
person that can touch Myah, but there are still times when I can't even
catch her. No one wants a dog that runs away from them when they come to
see it and possibly to adopt it. So Myah is still here. Then there is Tess
who was found in a garbage can when she was about 10 to 12 weeks old. She
does not trust any one but me. I can touch her but no one else can get near
her.She is now almost 3 years old.I have worked with these dogs
extensively, but the person who would adopt these dogs would also have to
work with them. No one ,so far has been willing to do that .It is a very
sad situation. I will keep them here for as long as they live. They have a
good life with plenty of food, clean water and vet care, and I do love
them. The rescue here provides the food and vet care for them. I just take
care of them every day.My guide, Neechee and Tess are best buds and hang
out together. Myah and my dog Tunyan hang out together. They are happy
here. They all get along and play with my dogs together. The only one that
does not get along is Shulamith. That is why I am finding her a new home. It
is a lot of work but that is what keeps me going.I need to keep my body
moving to be able to move. I need to keep busy so I can survive. If I
didn't have the dogs and the Bearded Dragons to care for and keep me busy,
I would probably sit in front of the TV and never move. So it is not a bad
thing, for me,it is a good thing. Mardi and Shaman, retired and Neechee and
Sedona, future guide dog.
