Hi, folks.

Here is a link to Dog Food Advisor, where you can sign up to get recall alerts via your email account.

Several years ago, I saw quite a few of these. One dog food manufacturing plant was the source of many brands having salmonella contamination. Apparently, FDA and USDA have stepped up their efforts in policing manufacturing facilities, and/or dog food brands that took a big hit on their reputation as a result of the recalls are being more diligent in contracting with reputable manufacturing facilities. I rarely see dog food recall alerts these days. So, if you are concerned that your inbox will be flooded with alerts, you can rest easy. I am happy to report that I will go for weeks without any recall alerts.

The Dog Food Advisor also rates dog foods. It can make your head swim. I try to stay with Flint River Ranch or Canidae. I've fed Iams and ProPlan. I had one dog that had loose stool on the Canidae, so I switched him to Iams, and he did fine. I've seen lots of heated discussions regarding brands, raw, grain-free, etc. I have no strong opinions other than to make sure that your dog is doing well on a safe, quality product that fits your lifestyle and budget. Personally, I try to feed foods that produce lower stool volume. Big dogs, big poops, big pick up bags!
