Hi Mikaela, I am four foot ten and love big dogs. My first was a twenty inch
golden retriever. My other three one labby and two goldens were in the
twenty four twenty five inch ranges. At Seeing Eye I have seen smaller labby
and goldens in the forty five weight range. TSE used to breed tiny shepherds
but they haven't done that in twenty something years. Now the smaller
shepherds are twenty one twenty two inches and fifty something pounds. I saw
a picture of a man maybe three foot something working a labby. He was a
friend of a friend and while he was healthy had several dog in the low
twenties in height. The advantage with Seeing Eye if you are progressive
like I am, I have OI, is they train their dogs to work with their grads in
power chairs.

Also dogs can be trained on either side. Normally it is on the left side.
Now they only train a dog on the right side for very good medical reason.
Two of my dogs were trained on the right side. Because of a bunch of
reasons, Jake has been retrained on the left side.

Becky and the snoozing Jake

Subject: [nagdu] Wanted: opinions about guide dogs

Dear guide dog users:

I am considering getting a guide dog. I am a little person, so I hope to get
a smaller dog. What kinds of dogs are available? What is the best training
program to use? Finally, what are the pros and cons of having a dog?

Thank you for your time and help.

Best,
Mikaela
