Marsha,
I am so sorry for your loss. I've lost pets throughout the years, and can only imagine how hard it is to lose a guide dog. My heart aches for you. It sounds like Emma has really enjoyed her retirement and was very happy. It's hard not to have had the chance to say goodbye, but many times we don' t have that option (especially if the death is sudden). Try not to be hard on yourself, I know that the bond the two of you shared still remained strong and Emma will always be there with you in spirit. Sending you hugs and good wishes as you heal.

My heart is very heavy and sad. As many of you know and for those who do not. My second guide came from TSE in 2008. Emma was a GSD that I received on my birthday that year. alot of life changes happened while I had Emma. Once we were living in PA, I had married my now husband, and pursueing my degree in SW. Emma became very very sick with EPI. Ongoing stress and working continued to make her sick. So I made the very hard decision in the summer of 2012 to retire her. Emma went to live on a farm with a wonderful family. She had two little boys to run after and keep safe. She had alot of animals to play with. and was very very happy. For the past year, I have been meaning to get up to the farm she was on to say hello, but life got in the way and I never made it up there. I received news a few days ago that Emma crossed over the rainbow bridge last Wednesday. My sweet gentle Emma girl is now in Heaven having fun with all of the other special animals. Emma was only 9 years old, but she never truly got 100% better after the EPI. When I was paired up with her, I was one of those people that never thought a human and K9 could bond so much. I never grew up with animals and I didn't have my first guide long enough to bond with. But Emma and I bonded. I loved that dog with all of my heart, much more than I ever expected. there were so many times that Emma saved my life, kept me safe, and was there for me. Now she is no longer here on earth, and I can't imagine what this is like. I have seen so many of the list members who have had dogs pass over that bridge. I said it would never be me, but now it is. I never even got to say goodbye. Anyways, my heart has a huge hole in it, and I now understand the pain of losing a beloved dog.
