[nagdu] collars

Raven,
You did a great job describing the martingale collars. I was horrified the first time I saw a choke chain, and to this day they make me queasy.

I completely agree that the Halti is a great tool. I bought one instead of a Gentle Leader (by mistake, actually), but I like the more control the Halti gives me.

Ironically, I don't clip the leash to the Halti loop under the chin; both the lease and the Halti clip share the D-ring on her collar. For whatever reason, this works best for Jenny. The leash is very heavy, and she's not a fan of it clipped to the Halti. But I do use it in high-distraction environments - pet stores, the vet - and I keep it in my purse.

Daryl

These collars are good for highly distracted dogs, or highly distracting situations. For instance, my dog has a moderate-to-high dog distraction, so whenever we go places where there is a doggie population, I put on his Halti. It also is a tool for those dogs who scavenge, or are too nosy. The Halti is the gentle leader's strappier cousin. The Halti is a head collar which snaps around the neck and has cheek straps connecting to a loop going over the nose. There is also a strap that runs under the chin where you clip the leash, and a strap with a clip that you connect to the working collar. I prefer the Halti over the gentle leader because the leash is right under the dog's chin, allowing you to know exactly what your dog is doing or where he is looking. A slip collar and martingale collar are 2 different collars. A slip chain is a full length of chain with a ring at either end. You make the collar by pulling part of the chain through one ring till you have a complete circle that you slide over the dog's head. The live ring is connected to the leash and moves outward from the dog's neck, while the dead ring moves over the chain inward toward the dog's neck. These collars are also called choke chains because nothing controls how tightly the collar can be pulled. It can pull tighter than the width of the dog's neck, which obviously chokes the dog. If a dog pulls hard on the leash while wearing this collar, the dog ends up choking himself. A half-check martingale collar is a strip of nylon culminating in a dead ring at either end, and a short loop of chain connecting the 2 dead rings. There is one live ring on the loop of chain. This collar can only be pulled until the 2 dead rings meet, and because there are 2 dead rings moving inward toward the dog's neck, pressure is distributed evenly around the dog's neck, rather than cinching in from one point on the throat. I'm horrible at describing things, so hopefully someone can provide clarification if what I just wrote was completely mind-bending. -- Raven You are valuable because of your potential, not because of what you have or what you do.
