A good amount of shepherds are put to work as guides here in the US.
In addition to the largest schools providing a small number of
shepherds, We have three small schools that train and provide German
shepherds only. There's Fidelco in Connneticut, the Eye Dog Foundation
in Arizona, and Independence Guide Dogs in Washington. I think those
schools only or primarily provide shepherds to residents in their
individual regions of the country.
Some of the larger or more known schools had lines of shepherds
experiencing great health challenges, so they've discontinued
providing shepherds, or acquired new lines of shepherds.
