This isn't ownership. Not at all.

If the school needs to look out for us because we aren't thinking, capable
adults, and they have to look out for the dogs for the same reason, then
why would they grant any ownership at all. I just think that is an
unfortunate and paternalistic policy.

This issue can be couched in whatever terms one wishes; however,
when we relinquish our authority over our property, what other concessions
will we be expected to make. I object to the inference that a guide dog
training program should make any decisions on our behalf. Either we own our
dogs or we do not; there is no gray area on this. As I mentioned in an
earlier post, my two previous guide dogs willingly and exuberantly worked
well past their 11th year: louiza until she was more than 12 and diamond
until he was more than 14! The only word to describe the policies of some
guide dog training programs is paternalistic. I do not need anyone else to
make decisions on my behalf, especially a guide dog training program that
has not had contact with my dog in nine years!

The National Association of Guide dog Users official statement of
policy is that full and complete ownership of the dog should be transferred
to the consumer upon completion of training. From that point on the
training program relinquishes any interest in the dog. There should be no
probationary period. They either accept us for training and, in doing so,
have trust in our capacity to do what is best for the dog. They should not
require reports, mandatory follow-up, or mandatory retirement. They should
not, especially, have the right to repossess our dogs "at any time and for
any reason at [their] sole and absolute discretion", as is the written
agreement with Fidelco.

Keep in mind that eleven is quite old for a dog. The school is just
looking out for what is best for the dogs and people.

Hi all! Yes, I heard regarding the Southeastern guide dog school policy. I
don't like the idea either that the dogs need to retire at age 11. I think
they should when they feel that they can't work anymore. In fact, I think
the dog will let me know when he or she does not want to work anymore guys!

What do you think? Just to let you know, this is actually my plan! I'm
actually thinking in applying to Southeastern guide dog school this July in
order to get my first dog! And I really don't know what could happen in
eleven years by now, but if it come the case when my dog is 11 years old
and he istill want to work, I'm not goign to retire him untill he lets me
know guys! And I know about the policy of the school,I'm actually thinking
in violating it! LOL! Perhpas they will take the hardness away or
something, but i am not goign to retire my dog if he still wants to work
guys! Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks so much and God bless!
