While we were waiting in the lobby to be seen I put Gipp down under my chair and he was very good and he never moved. Some of the dogs there weren't well behaved.

The tech bent down and petted Gipp and made friends with him, then he started the exam. The first thing he did was put a numbing agent in Gipps eyes. Then he did an initial exam testing Gipp's eyes for light reflex. He checked Gipp's eyes for any sign of injury and then looked at the growth on Gipp's lower eyelid. He said the doctor might remove it but he wasn't sure since it didn't seem to be bothering Gipp.

They looked into his eyes with the one machine. The doctor found a scar on his retina in the right eye. When I was at Leader Dogs training with Gipp before I came home with Gipp my trainer told me that Gipp had to see the vet to have some minor procedure done to his right eye. I don't remember what exactly was wrong with Gipp's right eye because it's been four and a half years ago.

The small growth we saw looked like a little stem with a bubble on top. She used a couple of swabs to drain some of the excess build up out. Both the growth and mass are near his tear ducts. She said surgery is possible but it's very complicated. She's done it before and said the surgeon has to be careful not to block the tear ducts when stitching up the items removed. The good news is none of this is effecting his guidework and she does not see any reason why he can't have a long and happy career. To minimize swelling in the growth she sent us home with a prescription for NeoPoly Bac Ophthalmic Ointment. We apply a small amount to the left eye 2 times a day for seven days then one time a day for two weeks then three times a week until notified otherwise. I also have to give him a warm compress on his eye twice a day.
