[nagdu] males and females

I've had both male and female guide dogs, mostly females. The two male dogs I had were completely different personalities. In general, I haven't found any differences in the personalities or work based on gender. The most confident dog I ever had was a small female black lab, and the softest, gentlest dog I had was a male yellow lab. I always need a special dog due to my other disabilities, so I never ask for a specific gender, but I have no problems either way with a boy or girl.

Pam,

Ive had three dogs, two females and a male. The differences Ive noticed are more about personality than gender. Every dog is different, regardless of gender.

Personally, I prefer female dogs, but thats because I have a deep-seeded fear of large, male dogs. Ive encountered many that were aggressive, and, although I realize thats how they were raised and they could have just as easily been females, Im still afraid. My current guide is a small black lab. I was really afraid of him to start with, but Ive had him for almost three years, and hes super cuddly and affectionate, not at all aggressive. Still, the fear of other dogs persists, so female dogs would just be easier for me, I think.
