[nagdu] Tie-Downs for our Guides on Access Shuttles

Hi Becky- I attach my dog's leach to my seatbelt. I connect the leach to the
dead ring and wrap the leach around my seatbelt using the short leach method
and that tends to keep the dog secure. Hope that makes sense *smile*

Michael I have been in two accidents with my dogs and there is no way to
hold the dogs on slick floored busses. I was sitting on both leashes secured
very well. Both times my feet were around my dogs. The hit happened my feet
flew up throwing me sideways in one accident and whiplashed me forward then
back in the other. Though both times the leash was still under my leg bottom
the force pulled it out faster than I could grab the leashes. And now I
think about how the force of the dog momentum going forward and I stopping
the momentum by grabbing the leash, it was probably better the one hit the
van dashboard and the other hit the jump seat. Thus a belt attached to my
belt and the dog is probably far safer. Never attach a tie down in a van to
the dog's collar. There is a video I object to put out by a school that
calls for this very collar to seat tie down in ambulances. Can you say neck
damage in the dog. Can you say trickier damage depending on how the quick
stop happens. I hold onto his harness handle and wrap my legs around him,
if I don't have his belt with me. Still he can tare out of my hand in a
quick stop but his momentum will be slowed a bit by the chest and martingale
slamming into his chest bone. Oopse think I wrote that backwards, but you
get what I am saying

I have been a handler for twenty two years and only two accidents with no
one hurt, most importantly my dogs weren't hurt.

Interesting topic, warm smile. I would like to learn more about momentum and
things I can do to keep both of us safer.

Becky and happy healthy Jake

Robert,

I agree. People should control their dogs. I am concerned, however, about
the National implications which is why I made the comments I did. Access is
one place.

Best Regards,

Michael Hingson

Mike,
Well, you can thank the people that felt their dogs were sliding around,
when they should have been holding on to them.
That is why this is in place, people were complaining and access went to a
school and said what do we do.
This is in place because of that, and yes, it is optional.

better to me. The tie down is not connected to the neck. But, rather, it
is connected some kind of a way to the harness. I still have not seen how
it works, and I found out I have a choice to do this or not. It is not a
requirement.

The national Federation of the blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want.
Blindness is not what holds you back.
