Rebecca,
YES, THIS!!! Thank you... you put into words something I couldn't quite spew out on my own. :)
I've got six weeks to make stuff and decide what I want to do, but you very quickly paired it all down into one thought. Thank you!
Daryl

Deryl, what you don't want is for you to
spend time chatting with someone about Jenny, then have the person say "it's
been great talking with you, your jewlrey looks so pretty, we'll be by again
later" and have them walk away. That time and energy is better spent on
talking with actual customers who are there to buy your product not chat
about your dog.
If you bring her, you need to make it clear in your own mind and to your
customers that you are there to sell and Jenny is your guide. If you are
good at redirecting conversation "So would you like to see the braclets I
have" when someone starts about Jenny, then you'll be fine. If you can't do
this, you may want to leave her home.
Whatever you do isn't set in stone.

Hello!
Interesting thoughts, everyone. Thank you all so much for your opinions! :)
I LOVE the table cloth idea; will take a look and see what I can find or
borrow :)

The only concern I have is that Jenny can get restless and is perhaps a
little too friendly... not necessarily the best combination with open
containers of little tiny round things... or sharp implements. But now that
I think about it, she'll sit behind my chair for HOURS while I bead stuff at
home...

Julie,

I always took my guide to trade shows even back in the 1980s and 90s as I
made them part of the sales process. Now you are right in that Africa is
part of the message, at least during book signings. It is all in how
confident one feels about bringing their guide and that is what I am trying
to say. If you truly feel you shouldn't bring your guide then by all means
do not. However, a lot of that decision stems from confidence unless there
is some physical reason concerning the guide being around a table or booth
for an extended period of time.

Best Regards,

Michael Hingson

My personal opinion is if your gut feeling is to leave her, then leave her.
It's a personal decision and there are a lot of factors to consider.

I took Monty to a youth involvement fair a few months ago. He did attract
folks to the table, but they were not customers. I think Michael's case is
different since his guides are a definite part of his message or the reason
he is there doing books signings or whatever. It makes sense for him to use
the dog as an advertising strategy. I would take my guide next time, but I
really like Rox's suggestion of the long tablecloth. I found I was
interacting with people about the dog and perhaps missing opportunities to
talk with actual potential customers.

Hi, guys!
Not sure how many of you know, but I make handcrafted beaded jewelry. I
decided to stop talking about it and take the plunge, and in about six weeks
I am doing my first ever craft show!

I am super excited and absolutely terrified! I know very little about
displaying my jewelry, and know that I will be creating pieces while I am
there, so my hands will be busy with beads and wire and scissors and
pliers...
I'm wondering if you think I should bring my dog. I've of two minds about
it. It will be winter, and she can get me there safely... but it's literally
two blocks away at a small venue, and with excitement and my nerves, I know
she'll pick up on it. I also want people to focus on the jewelry, not the
dog (which I do realize can go either way).

I know that once I get one of these shows under my belt, I will probably
feel more comfortable and will definitely bring her... but I feel bad for
almost wanting her to sit this one out.

Thoughts?

Daryl
