That's what the dogs are trained for! In fact, Holly loves new environs to visit! The sniffer works overtime and she loves exploring at least as much as I do! Although, I sometimes worry about getting lost, I never worry about bumping into or falling over things!

Aleeha,
Yes, it is perfectly acceptable to expect your guide dog to be able to work in new environments. When I travelled to Portland, Oregon last September, I was a bit worried about being in a new city, riding the light rail, and exploring the area without sighted assistance. Mambo handled everything beautifully, like it was a route he did every day! I actually think that my dogs have walked faster and with more confidence in new areas than they do on the normal routes. They seem to enjoy exploring the new areas. One of the things I enjoy most about being a guide dog handler is the freedom I have and confidence it brings me while travelling to new areas.
Deanna

Hey all,
I’m writing to seek your opinion on something that I’ve been pondering for a while. Do you guys find that it is reasonable to go to a brand new city with your dog, get directions to go somewhere, and get there, while still using the dog, even if the area is unknown? Am I wrong in thinking that the dog should listen to what you need, and not have a massive panic? I’ve gotten some push back from people on this and wanted to see your thoughts.
Thanks
Aleeha
