Hi,Harley and Storm weren't taught to squat to piddle. Harley will squat most times, but if there's a vertical surface he will, most likely, lift the leg.Dogs can be quirky.
Yours, Very Sincerely And Respectfully,

I doubt puppy raisers encourage squatting. It's just something young male
dogs do. I can't rememver exactly...I think Monty was 2.5 before he started
lifting his leg. My little Italian Greyhound would lift his leg and still
get pee on himself. And just to add more flavor to the discussion, I've had
girl dogs who lift their leg. Then there is Jetta who squats and lifts one
leg. She always keeps life interesting! LOL

Why do schools encourage the puppy walkers-raisers to have male dogs squat?
That is the first thing I discourage. Lift that leg high and proud, so there
is less urine on the fur.
My Baxter always smelled even with the lifting of the leg. Then I touched
his front leg and discovered which one was wet.
Try baby wipes to get rid of the Frito feet, grin.

Janice, I had a male Golden who did this routinely which was how I started
religiously taking off the harness for him to relieve. Yeah, ick.
About the only thing you can do is to wipe both legs with a wet paper towel.
That dog’s successor did lift his leg but he was small and short coupled and
would often get urine on the inside of the leg he’d lifted. Let’s not even
talk about all the urine they get on their paws.
Welcome to male dogdum.
