Well, already Mike has given me a whole new and quite reasonable idea for
going through this process. That's what's so great about this list! Your way
is probably safer, but I'll have to think on that one for me personally.

Jeff,

I use trains often, especially when I am on the East coast. I do not find it
difficult to go between cars with my guide dog. What I do is to find the
button to open the car door, step through and find the button to open the
door on the next car and then call my dog through. You do have to be fast,
but it is possible.

If the space between cars is too large I bring Africa through the door
leaving the first car and then have her stay before stepping across the
coupling between cars. I open the second door and then call her.

I treat the car couplings like escalators. I have Africa take a small jump
over the connection. So long as I do not show fear I have found that all my
guides have no problems in working trains.

Best Regards,

Michael Hingson

hi,
I am traveling to DC this week for Washington seminar even know we have all
this crazy snow we weather going on. This will be my first time traveling on
Amtrak with Benson my guy dog. I have a sleeper room and would like to be
able to go to the dining cars for meals. How do I go between the cars with
my guide safely. This is something I've done with the cane before but not
with my dog.
we're taking a super liner train from Chicago to New York and will have
three different meal periods.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and warmest regards.
