Yes indeed, you're right about the great food and ambiance in the diners of
days gone by. But your method has given me new food for thought for getting
to the dining car (lol!)

An engineer on the Zephyr? Cool. That was when trains were trains and they
served real food.

Hello Jeff,

As a lifelong train aficionado, I have enjoyed long-distance trains with
guide dogs on countless trips. (My dad was an engineer on the Denver Zephyr,
so trains were part of my childhood.) All my dogs have really loved
traveling by train. They most likely sense that I am happy and relaxed, so
it goes down the leash. But beyond that, they all seemed to like walking
through the train cars. I have never had a problem going from car to car,
but once I push the button and the car's door slides open, I try to walk
forward and press the next car's button as quickly but as calmly as
possible. I've never had a problem doing this, but I do take care as it
isn't an area of the train where I want to linger (smile.) Others may do
this differently, but for me the safest and most convenient way is to work
the dog through in harness, using my right hand to locate the door and the
button. Simply having the dog on leash gives too much freedom to sniff and
roam IMO.

If you have other concerns about traveling by train with your dog, or would
just like to chat about this offline, my email is

Have a wonderful trip!

Sherrill

hi,
I am traveling to DC this week for Washington seminar even know we have all
this crazy snow we weather going on. This will be my first time traveling on
Amtrak with Benson my guy dog. I have a sleeper room and would like to be
able to go to the dining cars for meals. How do I go between the cars with
my guide safely. This is something I've done with the cane before but not
with my dog.
we're taking a super liner train from Chicago to New York and will have
three different meal periods.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and warmest regards.
