[NAGDU] Fell, again

Here's the thing as I see it. We all make mistakes. So do our dogs. If I
thought for a minute I was not safe, I would have a school get out to my
place as fast as they could. Tracy is closer to the school than I am, so I
would maybe be a little anxious because of that. The falls aren't good, but
we can fall in our house if we slip on a wet floor or something. We have to
know in our hearts when is the right time to call in reinforcements. I think
we are given enough tools when we are trained that, coupled with additional
advice and reminders and experience, we ought to be able to solve an issue
like that without calling in a trainer. I think Tracy knows when she can't
do it alone. With Fisher and his pulling me down when he lunges at other
dogs, in retrospect I know that I should have probably used the GL a little
more because it was quite successful. I worked hard on the problem; maybe
not quite hard enough. Last time I calleda bout that problem and about the
fact that he was beginning to suggest that when I said what I wanted I might
not mean it, they never returned my call. They had once and I wasn't here; I
tried again and they did not return that call. I don't think the problem was
as serious as I was making it, but I think the other problem--the lunging
and some other issues I had that were my own and not his--drove me to maybe
prematurely retire him. He was and is a great dog, so is Krokus, and Tracy
has continued to make good progress with him. I did that, too, but someplace
along the line I might have become lax. So I think it is well worth the shot
of working with the suggestions given and the knowledge that Tracy has, and
even some of our suggestions that were given here, to see if it can't be
solved without a trainer.

Well I know you have a lot of experience and know-how and I'm not
belittlling that but if it were me I wouldn't feel safe, and I'd use that
wording, just if you do say that be prepared to face whatever the trainers
want to tell you, you say things like "I don't feel safe" and then all of
the suddenthey start worrying--lol at least in my experience but it sounds
pretty serious to me. Good luck and I wish you all the best and keep us
posted.
, friend.

Krokus is good in the subway. I make him work in the center, or on the
left. That's not because of him; I think it's best practice for any dog.

I'll see what I can do myself, before getting someone out. I'm not sure
they'd see anything anyway, as most of the time he's good. And I feel I have
the tools to work on the problem myself. If I change my mind, the school is
close by and I can get someone pretty quick.

In my opinion they should send someone, buand if it were me I'd insist, but
all right, it's your dog and your comfort level...by the way how is he on
subway platforms, does he tend to the right or is on the center left thre?

Yours,
Dan

I talked with a trainer yesterday. I'm going to try the idea of
occasionally stopping and checking where the edge is, and moving Krokus
over, if necessary. I'm also going to be more strict with him. I have not
made a fuss, if he brushes me against a bush, figuring people let them grow
halfway across the sidewalk, but I'm not going to let it slide anymore and
insist he stop or move over. That should make him more aware of what's on
my right. I'll also work on getting him to focus sooner, if I can. He
tends to start out a bit poky and looking around, then sharpen up after a
couple blocks when he gets into the groove. I've been working on this
forever, but I'll have to be firmer about it. I'm not a drill sergeant by
nature, but I think Krokus is a bit lazy, and only does what he's required
to do, so may benefit from me being more demanding.

The school won't send anyone yet, which is OK by me. I'll try the things
I've outlined, and, if I don't feel I'm making progress, they'll send
someone.

Tracy
