I'd also ask how much their car cost and if they got offended, I'd say
"Well, you started it" with a smile.

I did once, they said "oh I jut think it must cost so much to train them.'"
which really ddoesn't give me much of an indication of anything I mean, heck
what would they say if I asked them how much their car cost,,,I suppose some
would answer and some would really be annoyed.

Since a lot of the schools give us the dogs for free, that's mostly what I
tell the people who ask.  If the conversation goes longer, or if I feel like
the person is really interested in a good way, I give the figure-whatever it
happens to be at the time, that my program tells fund raisers is the annual
cost or the cost to train the dog from puppy to finished guide.  In my case
right now, it's around $18,000 US for a Gallant Hearts dog.  Lots of places
put the figure higher.  I think last time I handled a TSE dog the figure was
somewhere around $60,000 US.
