[NAGDU] Fees charged by Schools

The particulars of what makes a contract binding vary state by state. You'd
have to know the laws of the state in which the contract was made to know if
money has to be exchanged to make the contract binding.

As far as I know TSE charges the $150 for the first dog and $50 for
subsequent dogs. A small number of programs, Leader included, charge the $1
because of their state laws regarding contracts. Most of the programs
charge nothing. When Noah's Assistance Dogs was training guides they were
charging $1200. Personally I think as long as I can read the contract in
advance and know exactly what I'm agreeing to, I'm fine with whatever amount
of money or other terms. If I don't like it, I am free to choose something
else.

I was watching a video this morning about employment contracts and other
contracts for things like phones, credit cards etc. Apparently many of
these contracts include a clause that prohibits the person from addressing
conflicts via criminal or civil avenues, instead requiring any disputes be
settled by arbitration. I have not seen a lot of the guide dog program
contracts, but if this arbitration clause was in there, I'd steer far clear
of that program.

Without exchange of something of consideration no contract can be legally
binding.Leader Dogs charges a dolkar, but assumes the recipient has spent at
least that much in a vending machine.

I was not aware that schools charged a dollar for contracts. Of course The
Seeing Eye does charge, but I didn't know there were other schools that did.
