[NAGDU] A rant sort of

Hi Marianne.
If your health is good, and you can get out on your own, I encourage you to
do it. I have sometimes gotten into the habbit of travelling with a family
member most of the time. I found myself getting a bit anxious when I had to
go somewhere on my own. But I gathered my nerve and did it, and
rediscovered that marvelous sense of freedom I feel when it's just me and my
dog. I had to get out of what had become comfortable, but it was well worth
it.
Many years ago now, I read an article in the Monitor called The Habbit of
Independence. The author talked about how she'd been used to going anywhere
she wanted by herself, then her family moved somewhere where she always
needed a ride to get out. She got in the habbit of not going out alone,
because she didn't have much choice. Then, when they moved back to a more
walkable area, she had to make a strong, conscious effort to go back to
getting out on her own. She'd lost the habbit of independence, and she had
to work to get it back again. The article made a big impression on me.
It's pretty easy to break the habbit, but getting it back is worth the
trouble. And, for me, it's very satisfying, working with my dog, just us
two, with no one rushing me, or criticizing one of us, and figuring things
out between us, going where I want to go, when I want to go. It never gets
old.
Tracy

Cindy, I know you will make the decision that is right for you. I know what
you mean. I don't use my current dog that much but I am so much more
confident with a dog than with a cane. My health is good but since I work
from home and travel with a family member most of the time life has
definitely changed since I trained with my last dog. Emma is still an
excellent working dog but I don't know what my decision will be when it
comes time to retire her.
